How AngryBeat picks Station of the day
Station of the day is AngryBeat’s one worldwide live radio pick. It changes at midnight UTC. The same station is shown to everyone that calendar day, so a link you send still matches what a friend hears. This page explains how that pick is made — and what it is not. It is not a paid chart, not a local breakfast show, and not a promise that the encoder will stay up all day.
One live station, not a chart
We do not sell the slot. We do not take payment to put a brand on Station of the day. We do not invent listener numbers. The pick is a station from the live directory that recently looks playable — HTTPS, not an HLS-only phone killer, preferably one that has not been marked dead in the health cache.
The algorithm is deliberately boring: a day-based choice from a pool of directory stations, with a preference for streams that still look live. If today’s encoder is down by the time you tap play, the player can fail over, and the rest of the site still has thousands of other live cards. The daily page does not freeze on a corpse. We would rather a dull rule than a fake chart.
Why midnight UTC
A single worldwide pick needs a single midnight. UTC is that line. If you are in India, the new station arrives in the early afternoon. If you are in New York, it arrives in the evening. That is inconvenient for “breakfast radio,” and it is honest. We would rather one shared link than twenty geo-local charts we cannot verify.
Share the /today URL, not a screenshot of the name alone. Tomorrow the name will be different. The station’s own page at /station/… stays stable if you want that encoder specifically. There is no account and no paywall on the daily pick.
How it relates to health and cache
Listings come from Radio Browser via a local snapshot. Station of the day is chosen from that live-looking pool, then filtered again in your browser if the health cache has already suppressed the uuid. That is why two people can theoretically see a fallback if one of them has already failed the pick locally — the page still names the daily station, and play may move on.
We cache the directory so an upstream outage does not blank /today. Last-good snapshots keep yesterday’s map of stations. None of that is a promise that the daily encoder has five-nines uptime. Read why streams fail for the failure model.
What to do instead of waiting on one card
If you want a place, open Countries or a city page. If you want a sound, open Genres. If you want a language, open Languages. How to listen live is the general getting-started guide. Station of the day is a doorway, not the whole house. The daily station also has its own /station/… URL if you want that encoder after midnight UTC replaces the pick.
FAQ
No. The pick is editorial-free in the sense that we do not sell it. It is a deterministic daily choice from playable listings.
It is a worldwide pick, not a local chart. Use country and language hubs when you want a place or a language instead of waiting on one card.
Try play anyway; the player may fail over. The homepage and country pages still have other live stations. A dead daily encoder is not the site being offline.
